Yes, Cocaine is made from Coca leaves, but if we could just alter the song “drink more liquor, let the cocaine be” a little to, “drink more coca tea, let the cocaine be” I think we would all be a lot better off.   Coca Tea is one of the best drinks on the planet.  My wife and I were recently on a trip to Bolivia and there we were offered both coca in the leaf form and in tea form.  Most of the people we met there would chew the leaves of the coca plant or drink the tea similarly to the way we chew gum or drink caffeinated drinks.     Coca tea does contain the cocaine alkaloid, but it is in such a small dose (0.1%) that it is not harmful.  Pure cocaine, the kind that can kill you or addict you, is refined and separated from the rest of the coca leaf and then ingested at very high concentrations.  It is like radiation.  A little radiation from the sun is healthy and will cause your body to produce vitamin D.  Too much sun and you burn up and get cancer.  Coca leaves and tea are like the vitamin D.  Cocaine is like the cancer. The American Embassy in Bolivia recommends drinking Coca tea to alleviate altitude sickness. (LaPaz is around 14,000 ft.)    Yet, there is a world ban on selling coca leaves. The ban should be lifted and the coca leaf market opened up so that the drug trade will not be as profitable as the trade of the leaf in the raw form.     It takes 62lbs of coca leaf to make 1oz of cocaine.     

$4.75 for 1oz of premium tea X 62 lbs = $4,700.     1 oz of cocaine = $600 to $1200.   The legalization of coca tea would make it more profitable to sell it in its inert, positive leaf form rather than its dangerous, addictive, condensed form.  The drug lords would become farmers because they could make more money being farmers.      Of course, the best way to enjoy your cup of coca tea (if it is ever legalized) is in a CoolCorC cup sleeve since it is served very hot.
