Cork is from Central Asia!

While it is true that most wine bottle stoppers come from the cork forests of the Mediterranean most of the utilitarian cork that is used around the world comes from the Chingling mountains of Central Asia, and most of that cork is harvested by farmers in China.  The cork flooring that you may be walking on is almost all Asian cork.  If it has a particularly attractive surface, then the surface may have come from the Mediterranean, but most likely the innards are from China.  Even if it is “made in the EU” the filler cork most likely came from China.  Cork boards, cork coasters, cork cup sleeves (some), and cork Pilates blocks almost all come from China.  We’ve been there and seen it.   The people of China who harvest the cork and produce the goods are excited about the expansion of this industry as the world begins to realize the sustainable quality of cork.
